Album Oriented 95: Saturday Night Fever and Talk Talk

Erich examines that most elusive of bands, Various Artists, which debuts here on our lists with Entertainment Weekly’s #95, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. (It’s mostly the Bee Gees, we know–let’s not discount the Trammps and KC and The Sunshine Band.) Daniel takes on NME’s #95 and explicates Talk Talk’s 1988 jazz-rock odyssey Spirit of Eden in a way we can only describe as understated and tasteful. Erich’s Mid-Year Kicker Pick from 1982-83 will enchant you and have you reaching for your lip gloss and we’ll just leave it at that.

Album Oriented 96: Dixie Chicks and Public Enemy

We head down to Nashville as Daniel presents Home, The Dixie Chicks’ 2002 multiplatinum release and #96 on the Entertainment Weekly list. Erich watches Hollywood burn and invokes musique concrète in his exegesis of Public Enemy’s 1990 tour-de-force, Fear of a Black Planet, NME’s #96. And Daniel’s Mid-Year Kicker Pick from 1996 keeps the musique concrète pouring.

Album Oriented 97: Dusty Springfield and The Smiths

Two British icons, two iconic albums. Erich presents Dusty Springfield’s 1969 masterpiece Dusty in Memphis from Entertainment Weekly’s top 100 list, while Daniel has much to answer for as he tackles one of The Smiths’ five (count ’em, five) appearances on the NME top 100 with their 1984 debut, The Smiths. And we get a real treat with Erich’s Mid-Year Kicker Pick from 1976-1977.

Album Oriented 98: Queens of the Stone Age and Neutral Milk Hotel

It’s an indie rock extravaganza for the episode on our #98 entries. Dan rocks out with Queens of the Stone Age and their Songs for the Deaf (2002), from the Entertainment Weekly top 100. Erich explores Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), from NME’s top 100. Dan cheats, shamelessly, with his Mid-Year Kicker Pick from the year 2000.
